About us

Following the launch of Whau Ethnic Peoples Plan in 2019, community leaders, with the support of Auckland Council established the ‘Whau Ethnic Collective’ in response to one of the recommendations of the Whau Ethnic Peoples Plan to ‘initiate an Ethnic Peoples community-led development forum.’

The Whau Ethnic Peoples Plan was an initiative that stemmed from the Whau Local Board Plan’s (2015) Outcome Two: “Great neighbourhoods with strong community connections, capacity and voices”. The intention was that through the Whau Ethnic People’s Plan, Ethnic communities will have better access to local services, facilities, and programmes. It was also to provide a foundation to develop relationships between ethnic communities and the Whau Local Board, wider council, and general community.

Members of the Whau Ethnic Collective are community leaders from various Ethnic communities in the Whau. We welcome anyone who would like to join the Whau Ethnic Collective to come along. Through the work of the collective, we hope to strengthen and support leadership amongst the ethnic community, and achieve the recommendations of the Whau Ethnic Peoples Plan:

Short Term Recommendations

•        Develop a local board and ethnic peoples engagement strategy

Medium Term Recommendations

•        Develop an ethnic youth identity arts project

•        Develop a Diversity in the Parks Needs Assessment

•        Mainstream inter-ethnic exchange activities

Long Term Recommendations

•        Support the development of an inclusion and diversity through sports tool kit

•        Develop an information sheet of different options for accessing space

Through this website and community partnerships, we hope to create a more inclusive Whau, to meet the need of a growing and increasingly diverse ethnic community.
